Union Square, San Francisco |
Union Square is THE place for a spot of retail therapy in downtown San Francisco.
It is the third largest shopping area in the entire United States, arguable the best in the West, and also boasts some of San Francisco's best restaurants, cafes, hotels and theatres too.
Originally intended to be a public plaza by the city's forefathers, Union Square is bordered by four main streets - Post, Greary, Powell and Stockton. The plaza remains to this day and is a great place to sit in the sun, with the goddess of victory, Nike, towering over you as she has done for over one hundred years now.
You will find all the big names here - Macy's, Saks, Neiman Marcus and Niketown to name four - plus specialist designer stores like Bulgari, Cartier, Thomas Pink, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Guess, Agnes B. and Betsey Johnson.
Saturday afternoon is not surprisingly the busiest time to shop in and around Union Square - if you prefer things a little quieter weekday mornings are best. Most shops stay open until 8pm or later and most, including the larger shops, are open on Sundays too.
After you've shopped till you dropped, relax with a meal at one of the many restaurants in Union Square and then he for the theatre.
Cable cars run along Powell Street
and Union Square is also served by numerous trolley and bus lines and the F Market streetcar. The nearest subway station is also on Powell Street Station.
